Matthew Collins

Commercial Trumpet Player and Writer/Arranger based in Sydney, Australia. He enjoys a diverse freelance career as both a lead and section player spanning across big bands, musical theatre, latin bands, commercial work, brass bands and more whilst also holding a full-time position in the NSW Police Concert Band; Australia’s longest-running professional wind ensemble. Matthew is also the founder of the ‘Sydney Trumpet Quintet’, a family of trumpeters who write and perform a wide range of musical styles. A debut album of original compositions and arrangements is due out very soon.

The demands of my career require me to have tools I can depend on, and I find my Van Laar instruments such a joy to play. My B9.3 Bb trumpet affords me a wide range of colours and allows me to sing in a number of musical styles with great comfort and confidence. Similarly, it is a pure delight to play my OIRAM Ack flugelhorn in every setting. The quality of these instruments enables me to focus my mind solely where it should be when I’m playing – on my sound and in the music.
