Wim van Boven
The cornettist Wim van Boven and former principal cornettist with the Amsterdam Police Band, was born in Hansweert, the Netherlands. He not only studied the trumpet with Theo Laanen (principal trumpet player with the Residentie Orkest from 1933-1976) but also with Harry Mortimer in England, who is regarded by many as the world’s best ever cornet player. Wim was trained in the English brass band culture and has won many competitions, the most prestigious being the open solo competition in Oxford, England where he was the only participant from the European mainland.
During the course of my career, I have always made great demands on the quality of my instrument. The Van Laar Short Cornet Model meets my stringent requirements perfectly. It is warm in tone, yet sounds brilliant in all registers. The valves are outstanding and easy to play. The cornet is perfectly in tune in all registers. The sound produced is clear, pure and accurate over the entire range. The instrument is light and well balanced in the hand. Its appearance is classy and very special; due to its simple elegance it stands out from all others. This is all thanks to the superb craftsmanship of its designer and builder Hub van Laar.
